This legendary Ibiza restaurant opened in 1898 has closed its doors

Last December, one of Ibiza’s most famous addresses closed its doors. After more than 125 years in business, Bar San Juan Ibiza has closed and is now looking for new buyers.

A page of history has been turned in Ibiza. After more than 125 years of loyal service, the legendary Comidas Bar San Juan Ibiza closed its doors last December, leaving behind generations of loyal customers and a timeless atmosphere. This emblematic restaurant in the Marina district served its last dishes last december. Bringing to an end an adventure that began more than 125 years ago.

Founded by an inhabitant of Sant Joan (in 1874 according to some writings, but officially since 1898 according to the owners’ family), the Bar San Juan was initially a modest inn, where sailors and peasants passing through would stop off before heading back to their farms. Since the 40s, it has been in the hands of the Marí family, who have preserved its soul, its unchanged decor and its culinary traditions. A place where you could still enjoy generous home cooking at unbeatable prices, in a setting frozen in time. Surely one of the most traditional and historic restaurants of Ibiza.

The history of Ibiza on its walls

San Juan was also a living museum of Ibiza’s history. On its walls, photographs of former customers bear witness to a bygone era, when the young people of Vila dressed up to go dancing in Santa Eulària. It was also a popular address for celebrities. From legendary forger Elmyr d’Hory to stars such as Julio Iglesias, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull, many have enjoyed the authenticity of the place. Singer Sade even made a detour here years after her first visit, just to feast once again on their chops after abandoning vegetarianism.

But the soul of the San Juan was its voluntary immobility. Nothing has changed over the years, “except for the annual coat of paint”, as Joan, one of the owners, joked. Even the period hooks, once intended for room keys, were still there. The marble tables and wooden chairs had seen generations of gourmets pass through.

A new story to write

The curtain may have come down, but the story of the San Juan may not be completely over. Carlos Marí, latest owner, hopes to entrust this jewel to a new team, keeping the spirit of the place intact. A major challenge, as the establishment seeks a buyer via Pure Real Estate Ibiza, an agency specializing in foreign investment.

Will San Juan withstand Ibiza’s evolution or disappear in the wave of modernization sweeping the island? One thing’s for sure: regulars will always have a taste for this timeless address.
