A free open-air film festival in Formentera all summer long

GET THE POPCORN AND CUSHIONS READY FOR A SUMMER FULL OF CINEMATIC MAGIC UNDER THE STARS! FOR THE 17TH YEAR, CINEMA A LA FRESCA IS COMING TO FORMENTERA FROM 27 JUNE TO 8 SEPTEMBER, WITH 32 FILMS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD SHOWN FREE OF CHARGE IN THE OPEN AIR.

It’s going to be a cultural summer in Formentera ! Thanks to French resident Véronique Landy, who joins MC [Miquel Costa] Serveis Culturals as Artistic Director this year, Cinema a la fresca is set to set the pace for the summer on the neighbouring island of Ibiza. An open-air film festival that will allow locals and tourists alike to enjoy the balmy summer nights while taking in classic and contemporary films, both national and international, free of charge.

From 27 June to 8 September, no fewer than 32 films from all over the world, shot between the 1920s and the present day, will be screened. And brace yourselves, because all the screenings are in the original version with Spanish subtitles. We’re not here to mess around with quality !

A film festival from around the world throughout the summer

The screenings will take place on Tuesdays in the Jardí de ses Eres in Sant Francesc, on Thursdays in the church square in Sant Ferran, and on Fridays in the courtyard of the Casa del Poble de la Mola. All great chill-out spots to enjoy the magic of open-air cinema.

The programme ranges from adrenalin-pumping action films to heart-stopping dramas and refreshing comedies. The season opens on Tuesday 27 June in Sant Francesc with a screening of the acclaimed ‘Brokeback Mountain/In No Man’s Land’. On Thursday 29 June in Sant Ferran, the film ‘The Other Side of Hope’, about a young Syrian whose application for asylum is rejected but who decides to stay, will be screened.

And to keep the momentum going, on Tuesday 4 July in Sant Francesc, don’t miss « Alcarràs » by Carla Simón. A film that swept all the awards in Spain and Europe last year (with a special mention at the Golden Bear in Berlin for best film) and has racked up no fewer than 11 nominations for the Goya awards in 2022. Suffice to say, it’s a heavyweight !
